Butterfly Conservatory Of Goa

Butterfly Conservatory of Goa is designed to disseminate comprehensive information on various aspects of the biology of Indian butterflies, encourage their observation to study their natural history and ecology, gather population and distributional data in a centralized database, and spread awareness about their conservation. Butterfly Conservatory of Goa is a sister of the Moths of India, Cicadas of India, Odonata of India, Reptiles of India, Amphibians of India and Birds of India websites.It is developed by the Indian Foundation for Butterflies (“IFoundButterflies”), an organization of butterfly biologists and butterfly-watchers, who work towards research and conservation of Indian butterflies. Butterflies of India is a model of “citizen science”, where ordinary citizens participate in gathering scientific data and building this free resource on Indian butterflies.

Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary

Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary is Goa’s only bird sanctuary, 1.8 Sq Km in area. A variety of local and migratory birds can be found on this island. Open throughout the year, the sanctuary can be visited with the permission of the Chief Wild Life Warden, Forest Department, Junta House, Panaji. It is named after the famous ornithologist, is located on the island of Chorao along the Mandovi River. Spread in an area of 440 acres, the sanctuary is covered with a thick mangrove forest, which is usually a natural nesting ground of birds. Different varieties of swallows, bulbuls, kingfishers, swans, woodpeckers, hornbills, etc. are found in plenty at this place. The sanctuary has 1km-long pathway on which one can walk as close as possible to see the natural habitat of birds, without disturbing them. One can also choose to hire a boat and go around the place. Apart from a rich variety of coastal birds, one may spot flying foxes, jackals and crocodiles.
